Techniques for Getting Valid Data: Certificate Series:

a 6-Part Mini Series

Take one, all, or any combination.

                                      Thursday's 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Central Time

                                   10/5 through 11/9

Intended Audience:  This program is for internal and external consultants wanting to strengthen the data-gathering skills used when designing job task analyses for training and certifications.  The methods include observing and interviewing individuals and groups at task and in work settings.  You will see real examples, practice some of the methods, and get jobs aids with practical guidelines you can apply to your work.   The Data Gathering series is part of Hale Center's 2023 theme on Consulting and specifically focuses on the technical skills required of consultants.

You can take the whole series or just selected topics that are most relevant to your work.   When you complete the series, you receive a certificate in Data Gathering.

Topics in the series are:

  1. How to Conduct Observational and Cognitive Interviews and Interpret the Results:  learn how to discover what experts do and think, and why they make the decisions they do ($69*)
  2. How to Conduct Critical-Incident Interviews and Interpret the Results:  find out how to discover what high performers do that sets them apart, why they are better at what they do than others, and how to surface attributes that distinguish exemplar performers from the rest ($59*)
  3. How to Conduct Group Interviews including a Delphi and the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) and Interpret the Results:  find out what differentiates the NGT from the Delphi Technique and the process for conducting focus groups; find out why the NGT is a more effective method for uncovering required knowledge and skills in ways that can be more easily analyzed ($89*)
  4. How to Conduct and Interpret a Sociogram:  learn to use this technique that graphically displays a group's communication patterns, and identifies informal leaders, outcasts, social cliques, and measures group cohesiveness ($79*)
  5. How to Conduct a Modified Flanders' Interaction Analysis and Interpret the Results: learn to use this technique to capture communication patterns between group members, confirm who initiates, responds, passes judgment, acknowledges others' feelings and ideas, and the like.  Use the results to help others communicate more effectively ($69*)
  6. How to Develop Surveys:  learn how to design and develop surveys that validate your findings derived from other methods ($79*)
